Don’t call it unplugged – Acoustic Folk from Armenia
Don’t Call It Unplugged
Henry Karagyozyan – voice, guitars, author
Koryun Bobikyan – violin
Vahan Stepanyan – flute
Karen Arakelyan – percussion
This totally acoustic folk band started as a solo project of songwriter Henry Karagyozyan in 1999. At that time Henry performed his songs alone, singing and accompanying himself on the guitar. In the end of year 2000, to emphasize folksy tendencies, Henry asked violinist Koryun Bobikyan to join him during an appearance on Pacific I acoustic festival. The symbiosis was so euphonic that Koryun decided to join the band permanently. The whole year 2001 Don’t Call It Unplugged performed on various festivals and concerts, appeared on TV and radio as a duo. In the beginning of 2002, wishing to change and enrich the sound, Henry decided to enlarge the line-up with flute and percussion. So Vahan Stepanyan and Karen Arakelyan joined the duo on flute and percussion respectively. Also Hovhannes Grigoryan was responsible for additional guitars on a couple of songs. The band started to rehearse actively and already in February presented a monolithic program “Into Prehistoric Sound” in the Assembly Hall of the Armenian Society for Cultural Links. The essence of the idea and conception of Don’t Call It Unplugged was expressed in the title of the program. It was “to reach the authentic purity of sound not distorted by various electronic effects and frills”. This concert was followed up by numerous concerts and appearances, among which were the concert for disabled people in Armenian Red Cross Society Rehabilitation Center and another full-length conceptual program – “Search for Light”, which was recorded during its premiere at the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinematography and later prepared as a self-made live album. In 2003 Don’t Call It Unplugged recorded their single “The Ancient Mystery (Forever on Stage)”.
